Blackstone Fortress - first play through

So on Wednesday evening Steedo came over we had a bash at the Blackstone Fortress. We play a one off expedition to get a hang of the rules before we tried the full on campaign for the hidden vault, with the rest of the collection.

We picked the 4 explorers, from the 5 (well 6) I had painted. We had Esperanto Locarno, Thaddeus the Purifier, Dahyak Grekh and Pious Vorne (Rien and Raus were left in the box, as we thought that the extra move might have to much for our tiny brains).

I set up before Steedo arrived as much as I could - popped all the little bits of cardboard out and sorted the cards out - I may have made an error here as I set up for the campaign, but I think I should have kept some of the baddies in (such as the beastmen and rogue psykers, but to be honest we found it pretty tough as it was) for the one off game. The victory conditions were that we had to get 4 clues and 8 points of archotech.

The first two encounters we had were challenges - the first what appeared to be a simple move across a bridge using agility and defence rolls, where we managed to hobble our explorers with some wounds, the second challenge I can’t recall, but at the end Esperanto Locarno had completed his secret agenda and was now was using the inspired profile.

The initial combat board - lots of traitor guard and a spindle drone to try and thwart the galant heroes. This was a tough combat and took us the longest to complete as we were learning the rules and how the hostiles act.

The explorers finally managing to extract them from the chamber - I believe that Pious Vorne managed to get herself out of action. But she survived the recovery phase and improved her vitality, so could continue the expedition - we weren’t convinced that we actually gone the rules right here, but went with it as we were enjoying the game.

The second combat was a little easier. With spindle drones and negrovolt cults as opponents.

We tried a couple of different tactics this time - an all out assault on the hostiles, a dash for the discovery markers and to summon the exit chamber rather than wait for one in the event roll.

This worked a treat - all baddies killed - more archotech collected (we ended up with 11 points, we only needed 8) and up to 3 clues - only one more needed for the win. We also discovered that we had possibly over used the support from the ships - never mind fog of war and first time play through. Picture above shows the explorers in the exit chamber and the spindle drone reinforcements a long way away. Confidence was up we would bear the game.

The final combat started off like the second so we thought - this time cultists and traitor guard.

Unfortunately this time the dice gods were against us so although we got the final clue Esperanto was beaten to a pulp by the cultists and needed to use the destiny dice to move, Dahyak Grekh received 3 grievous wounds and was in a bad way - Thaddeus picked up 2 more wounds … 3 characters and 2 dice and the destiny dice to move them ..: with a debris twist on the encounter card meaning that moving across cover was an extra point of movement.

At this point Pious Vorne’s flamethrower became very effective as she first incinerated the cultists then the traitor guard. One of the characters pick up the final clue from a discovery card, so we were all set for the win if all the explorers could get to the exit ….This was a really tense ending to the game as if one character died the expedition would be over and we would have lost having collected the booty. We needed the event roll and the reinforcement rolls to go our way …

Which on the whole they did - I think we need to check the placement rules for the traitor lasgunners as they arrived in the final turn. But Steedo and I will take the hard fought win … very close.

We really enjoyed the game and reckon the campaign will be good fun - I plan to play another few rounds with the stand alone set up with the other heroes when they are painted (before February), to see how they play - will also include the beastmen and psykers (and the chaos marines if they are painted).

We like the destiny dice mechanism, but need to check the hostiles rules, and explorer recovery during an expedition - other than that I think we got the rules pretty much right (apart from using the ship support a couple of times when it should have only once during the expedition). I think having a hostile player might make the game a little bit more challenging if they go for it.

Hopefully we will see the campaign for the Hidden Vault play out in 2022.

Happy new year, let’s hope that 2022 is an improvement on the last couple.

Blackstone Traitor Guard 2

With a bit of effort I have painted the second lot of traitor guard for Blackstone Fortress.

Just got to varnish them but all done now. Might be the last painted before Christmas Day.

Only the chaos space marines and 3 heroes to go before Blackstone is all painted.

Seasons greetings.

Blackstone and Kill Team stuff

Work has been busy and the painting mojo has not been with me. And now we are in the festive season evenings are at a premium …

For Blackstone Rein and Raus have been painted.

These weren’t my favourite to paint - I didn’t get into a rhythm with them - but they are done. Just an couple of heroes, traitor guard and chaos space marines to go.

Also some barricades for Kill Team.

Two games now ready to play.

I did ask the collective if anyone fancied a game this evening … but as I said earlier the festive season is taking its toll on availability. Might have to fly solo.

Game of Thrones - the Christmas gathering

The collective congregated at mine for a pre Christmas game (or hopefully 2) - first to the table was Game of Thrones (something 4 of us had played 6 years ago),so basically was new to us all. The gathering was due to start at 14:30, but we weren’t all assembled until about 16:00 …

We randomly picked which of the six houses we would play: I was Stark, Sylon was Baratheon, Steedo was Martell, DK was Tyrell, Joe Exotic was Lannister and Snake-eyes was Greyjoy.

DK was babbling about Snake-eyes have the strongest house and the game was broken …

Initial set up (15:20)

A cagey opening (16:44)

17:24 Things are hotting up Snake-eyes has made a move with the Greyjoys and battles have been fought around the neck with the Starks … meanwhile in the south there is some gardening going on and “helpful”tactical advice from Steedo.

19:17 and things have kicked off with the Joe Exotic’s Lannisters attacking the Greyjoy’s and posed to take Pyke - Snake-eyes was not happy and in a precarious position. In the south there was quiet growth and a few skirmishes between the Baratheons and Martells.

20:56 - The Lannisters were the leaders pushing out in all directions - but would they be squeezed from the North and the South (by the Starks and Tyrells respectively). It is around this time Steedo (I think) pointed out I could capture the Eyrie - which I did (I was contemplating destroying the Greyjoy’s, for the attack on me which started the wars), as it was a better idea. Also I worked with the Greyjoys (as Snake-eyes was desperate for revenge on the back stabbing Lannisters) - this took me to 5 points on the victory track, only two away from winning - and I had 2 fairly easy strongholds within reach. Unfortunately after the rest on the table spent a while working out there own plans … Steedo looked north and spotted my opportunistic gamble and the talk went to how to stop the honourable Stark … the upshot was I managed to get to 6 points before being pegged back to 5 - I had my high water mark.

23:05 - the final push (well turn) - my objective was to hold my 5 fortresses, so I could’ve I with a shout at the end … mean while Steedo, Joe Exotic, Sylon (apologies to him as at one be I described him as “not a threat”, well to me at least at the time) and DK revealed their plans for victory … or at least not being last. Steedo went first thwarting both Sylon’s Baratheons and DK’s Tyrells and moving himself into what he believed was a winning position - I had a content himself by removing Snake-eyes last stronghold - he was off the score board … only to see Steedo point out a way for Joe Exotic to take from me and move himself level on points with Steedo on 5 - although this did take a long time …

23:55 The map at the end - where Steedo’s machinations have him level on 5 points with the Lannisters - but this is when secondary victory conditions came into play - and Joe Exotic won (again) with more Fortresses …

The final scores were -

5 Lannisters and Martells

4 Starks, Baratheons

3 Tyrells

0 Greyjoys

A good but exhausting game - the only one played on the day.

We have had quite an extensive chat after the game (and in WhatsApp) about how to speed things up - too much time is spent letting people work out the best move, so it makes it difficult to take advantage of mistakes or having to deal with the consequences of mistakes, which I think would make the game quicker and more fun. And be more “realistic” for the actual people in Game of Thrones world. Make a choice and deal with it … I think timers would help - either for each round or for total playing time for the game … With penalties in game (with GoT randomly having an order type you can’t place for a turn, but this would need to be agreed).

We all had chances to win or be high on the leader board, so a good days gaming.

A little painting done

I have managed to paint a Blackstone Fortress adventurer - the Navigator.

I am pleased with how the purples came out - I think that I now have enough adventurers to actually play Blackstone Fortress - perhaps a go before Christmas.

Below 5 regiments of 15mm Saxon cavalry for Age of Reason games - well Maurice or GaPa. At the back are 3 regiments of dragoons - some of which are survivors of my old British and Dutch armies sold off long ago.

The cuirassiers are refugees from the old French army  - all of these are Roundway miniatures. The standards are a little rough - but very small to paint.

It’s nearly Christmas!! Well not really …

Well haven’t I been busy with lots of things … but not  much game related.

Been for a ramble on Exmoor and saw lots of Red deer - which was nice.

Also managed to finish the house alterations - apart from putting the pictures back up as we have to order some new furniture for the master bedroom and then decide where the old stuff goes.

I have started on a couple of the Blackstone Fortress heroes, so should be able to play a game soon. I have also painted some command stands for the Saxon Age of Reason army, but if I and honest nut the best painting - I think that the old rank and file (which I painted 20 years ago) are probably better. But they are painted, so could be a battlefield soon … pictures when they are varnished.

The collective have managed to organise a pre Christmas get together, which should be fun. I understand that the Game of Thrones board game (after being played once about 7 years ago) and Battlestar Galactica (a classic of the group - I think we have only one once in about 10 plays), will be the games on the table. The six of us should hate each other by the end of the day. Because all six of us are playing it does limit the games we can play - especially miniatures games as they generally suit 2 to 4 players. Will have to get some smaller games in soon. Especially as I have painted stuff for Blackstone and Kill Team … amongst other things.

Work has been hectic - which is nice … I think that it the dark nights and mornings which are sapping my motivation at the moment … things will get better.

Dune and Stuff

Well the better half and my good my good self escaped for a couple of days from the drudgery of chores and stuff … and she agreed to see Dune! On an Imax screen no less.

So what did I think of Dune - well it is spectacular on the imax screen. The cinematography, special effects and production design are so good. I enjoyed it - but I like the David Lynch film from the eighties … I have read the books or seen the miniseries set in the universe.

Now I think this helped me with the story and what was happening, because when I asked my better half what she thought, “it’s not the worst film I’ve seen”, was the reply. She found it difficult to follow what was happening at times and who was doing what. - this could have been my fault as I didn’t prime her ( DK suggested that I should have after the event), but as she is not a great fan of the fantasy and sci-if genres, I thought it would be best for her to discover the story through the film - but that didn’t happen. So that is probably a flaw in the film, that the narrative is tough to follow if you aren’t already familiar with the source material. We both found the sound too loud at times (probably our age) which seemed to muffle some dialogue. I am looking forward to part 2, but will have to go with someone else.

Also while away we visited Belas Knap long barrow.

A darn impressive tome to last 5000 years …

Something spooky for Halloween.

New Kill Team stuff

While I have been remodelling the house I have also managed to find the time to get hold of a few extra things for new Kill Team. For a good price (Zatu games) I picked up the compendium.

I have to say I was a bit nervous about buying this, but it is a good resource - lots of stats in there. I have also got the White Dwarf with extra stuff for the Skitari and Sicarians. On reading the rules it became apparent that some decent tokens were needed (and the shaped based measuring gauges would help), so after prowling eBay for some - to no avail, I picked up the Kill Team essentials box from a FLGS - https://www.incomgaming.co.uk/  (well not very local to me to be honest, but obviously local to someone) - the shop was in one end of a pub - so gaming and ale. Potentially a quality gaming venue if you are in the area

The barricades are part of the set up so that will help with a game. Hopefully I can organise one fairly soon, as I have a number of marine abs Ad Mech teams available ….

DK’s birthday games

On Saturday the collective gathered together to celebrate DK’s birthday. Steedo, Sylon and Snake-eyes arrived early and got some games of Unmatched in.

Tony the Tiger and my-good-self arrived around 2 hours later (me due to decorating and flu jab) … and the Tiger King (new name for Tony the Tiger …).

We started off with a 3 games of Captain Sonar. This is a team game, where players take on roles of submarine crew. Captain who gives orders for direction, torpedoes, mines, drones and sonar. The First Mate - who charges and records what systems are available … depending on what the Engineer has used to power the movement of the boat. The Engineer who has to record what system have been used to power the movement - however if you cross off a system - then that system can’t be used. The radio operator who has to record the movement of the other teams sub - so that torpedoes and mines can find their mark.

We played 3 games - two turn by turn and one real time. The teams were Snake-eyes, Steedo and Sylon versus Tiger-King, DK and myself. I found the turn by turn games the more enjoyable as there were actual tactics and planning which could be done. The real time game was chaotic as you were moving as quickly as possible, as were the other team. A fun game - which I would play again - the results were 3 sinking to my team!

After Captain Sonar we played a game of Skulls, which the Tiger-King won …. Then DK fed us with a very nice lasagna. At this time Steedo left to watch some amateur dramatics.

We then played a game of Terraforming Mars.

The game is obviously about Terraforming Mars - each player picks a corporation and some starting money or attributes. My corporation was a green one, so I set about improving Mars - I am pretty sure that I put more seas and forests down than anyone else. Unfortunately these in themselves don’t earn you victory points. The game was fairly close, but the final scores were Tiger-King 60, DK 59, Snake-eyes and myself 52 and Sylon on 46 (I had ended the game with the final forest getting the oxygen level up, but had to leave as my lift had arrived). A really good game with nice pieces - I didn’t get any red burner cards (these seemed to be provide some very good benefits to my competitors), but tried to be consistent with the corporation - even managed to get herbivores and predators on to the red planet.

A good days gaming and hopefully DK was happy with his lambrini … which appeared to the gift of choice.

Home reconfiguration ….

For the last few weeks in have been reconfiguring a couple of the bedrooms up stairs while Thing 2 was away at university.

Between Thing 2’s room and the little spare bedroom (what used to be my painting and store room) were a couple of built in wardrobes. These were a bit problematic as with a normal bed in the little room you couldn’t open the cupboard doors properly. So after a lot of effort and a new power tool (a reciprocating saw) I managed to get through to and remove the wood - there were a lot of nails holding things together.

So that took 2 Sunday’s - then Roy of the Rovers, local plaster came around last weekend and the wall was replaced between the rooms - with the little room gaining all of the space - approximately 1.5 square metres.
Pictures above of the finished plastered wall in Thing 2’s room and the stud wall from the little room.
Thing 2’s room has now been repainted and just needs putting back together. The little room has been plastered - waiting to dry out then painting …

So miniatures have had to take a back seat for a bit.

Tinners’ Trail and beer …

Steedo invited Keeno and my good self over for some beers on Friday. I suggested that we give Tinners’ Trail a try, as Keeno would give it a go (not really a gamer, but loves Kernow). If I recall correctly Steedo bought it so he could groom Keeno into a gamer.

So we gave it a whirl and had some beer (more on that in a bit).

The game plays over 4 rounds. Each round players take it in turns to play an action - costing different amounts of action points - until 10 points are spent. Then scoring for the round is done - the order you finish the round in changes the value of the victory points you can buy. The actions can be build a mine which involves a bidding process (with potentially some bluffing), installing wheel pumps, building boats or later in the game railways and of course selling pasties. The aim is to earn money from mining copper or tin - each round a new price is randomly set for the price of each item. Mining can be expensive as you need to pay to pump the water out - for example if there 2 water tokens in a mine then it will cost £2 to mine each unit of tin/copper out.

In our game Steedo and Keeno went into an early lead in round one, while I was building mines … in round two I was able to do a fair bit of mining when the price of copper was high … getting into a nice lead. Round three saw Steedo make a push for catching up. However I managed to strip mine the north Cornwall coast - so I managed to stay ahead. Round four was more difficult as there were few mines left and couldn’t mine, so I was worried that Steedo would be able to catch me. However Keeno managed to bluff Steedo into buying an overpriced mine …

The final board - Keeno 132,  Steedo 234 and me on 25something. The game was interesting - lots of elements to balance out - I think I was lucky that I didn’t mine much in the first round, then was able to in the second. I think Steedo was trying to experiment with the various different actions, which hindered his scoring at times. It would be interesting to see how it plays with more players.

The bees tried were Fullers London Porter - a full flavoured beer - reminded Steedo on the Guinness West Indian Porter. Otter Head - a strong local ale, which we have had before, but suffered by following Ludlow Brewery’s Stairway - a light ale (with Eastern European hops), still a 5% beer which was the best of the night. There was something with peaches in it, but the less said about that the better.

Bugs - done!

Well apart from a little basing to be done all of the Starship Troopers bugs are now painted.

These last two are lumps of metal. I will try and sort out a showcase of the whole army at some point (when the basing is complete), but I have a new project of ripping out some built in wardrobes to do and lots of work to fit in as well, so I will see.

The mantis bug - a big bestie which should deal quite a big of damage to marauder suits. I when for a basic mantis green - what an imagination.

Finally the Brain bug - the arachnid master mind. It should have some little (chariot) bugs to carry it about, but when DK and I pick up a used set of Starship Troopers years (and years ) ago at a show there were no bugs in the box. I am hoping to pick up some cheap kids toy bugs to stand in sometime … not seen any yet.

I am not out of bugs to paint so should get back to Blackstone Fortress next. I have purchased a copy of the new Kill Team compendium, so will look to see how that game plays soon … when I finish my chores.

Rippler Bug Swarm

The arachnids now have a swarm of nasty Rippler bugs to rip the mobile infantry apart!
With my trusty dry brush in hand I have managed to paint this lot (well 9) of bugs.

I went for 3 different colours so I could use them as separate groups of three if I wanted. The turquoise glaze works well over a white base coat for the wings.
Just need a coat of varnish and they can see action!

I only have the brain bug and an mantis hunter bug to do and the arachnids are done. I will put the mantis on a base as it is a bit fragile (a leg has fallen off in the painting process).

I have a feeling that these will see action in a game of Xenos Rampant for a game of Starship Troopers … Space Marines versus bugs …. Cool.

Obviously I should be painting stuff for Blackstone Fortress …. I will start soon on a hero or two.

Back to work - impact on painting

So I have been back to work for a couple of weeks and it has seriously affected my painting output. We have a new platform to get my head around while still having to put things on the old one - nothing like duplicating work to motivate you.

We have also taken thing 2 off to university, so the house is quiet - I don’t think the change has really hit home yet.

However I have sat down and dry brushed a tanker bug (not one from the original SST range by Mongoose, but a toy one by Galoob - it is smaller that the Mongoose one but probably more durable and easier to store).

I have also let myself down a bit by getting a copy of the Core Rules for Kill Team …. Which I wasn’t going to as it doesn’t have the stats for any of the factions. Now GW have produced a Compendium of stats for the game - but one of the reviews pointed out that almost all my teams weren’t valid anymore.

Now GW have published new stats (different from the compendium) ones in White Dwarf. I have bought this issue and it does work with my current Adeptus Mechanicum Kill Team. It will be interesting to see what comes next … especially I have bought the Space Wolves Reiver set for the old edition of Kill Team … I am not supposed to buy stuff … I might have to get the compendium so I can play a game!

Been a while - Cosmic Encounter

A rather late game report as last week the complete collective met up for pizza, a game and for Sylon and Tony the Tiger to meet in person for the first time.

Tony was going going to be late so we started a game of Cosmic Encounter - a game we hadn’t played in at least 6 years (in fact I don’t recall playing it at all) and dating from the 70’s - I recall seeing adverts for the Games Workshop version in White Dwarf before they went all in house and grim dark.

We randomly dealt out 3 races and then picked one. Dave and I took an early lead, before cagey playing brought Sylon and Steedo into contention.

The game was close and as we pulled Dave in Sylon joined him one point away from victory - so they connived to claim a joint victory.

Then Tony turned up and it was decided to play another game of Cosmic Encounter. This was a tense game with lots of tight play - meaning the warp was packed with ships.

The game was so close that there was only one loser and 5 winners - a bad night for Snake-eyes as the only gamer without a win.
I enjoyed Cosmic Encounter, as I think the rest of the collective did. We need to on our negotiating part of the game. I would like to play it again sometime.

I have also let myself down by buying the tactical ops cards and the Kill Team Core Rules book off eBay. I can’t actually play the game yet as I would need the compendium to get the data sheets and I’m not sure that many of my Kill Teams are still legal ….

Mantic Sci Fi Checkpoint

On the 2nd June I put together the Mantic terrain crate sci fi checkpoint - in the last couple of days I have painted it.

My old Star Wars RPG character Jargo Khan is modelling the scale of these pieces.

Here we have electro-ducting as generally annoying linear obstacles (these appeared to be columns in the original set, but I couldn’t see how to use them with the stuff I had so they became these things). In the background we have a radar/radio dish and a big gun thing (this is only dry brushed as I am not sure what to do with it).

The military defensive line pieces - dry brushed and that’s about it.
The watchtower/strong point.
The main building - with steps to the roof.
These have come out rather well me thinks - I added a few transfers here and there. More importantly I have managed to squeeze them into the storage space ….
I do have an issue here - some more things will have to go….

The stuff for black undercoat ready to go ….

The last of the Starship Troopers (apart from the metal stuff), ripper, mantis and tankers bugs and some mobile infantry (I think that I will sell the last unopened pack I have of these and the wasp troopers (I don’t like the figures to be honest) and one of the 2 chicken hawk walkers). Also there are some 15mm Age of Reason - planning to become Saxons. And of course the last of the Blackstone Fortress miniatures.

Should be a busy autumn of painting…

Space Marines - Assault Intercessors

The Assault Intercessor from the Recruit Edition of Warhammer 40k Starter starter set I pick up last year.  The starter set set was picked up for the figures - Necron and Space Marines for Kill Team. In a fit of activity I have managed to finished these within a year of purchase - must unusually for me!

Generally pretty happy with these (basically done, apart from a few tuffs on the bases). The extra ridge on the right shoulder pad caused the rams head to be a bit more difficult to paint.
The Space Marine's also have a Lieutenant to lead them (if only I had the Commanders expansion).
So my Space Marines now have 5 squads and a leader - so possibly a combat patrol sized force (I am not sure if they should have some fast attack or dreadnought) - although I am thinking of selling my copy of the 40k Core Book as there is too fluff in there - would consider the smaller version of the book as a replacement. I am planning to have a go with these in Xenos Rampant.
As I picked up the Pariah Nexus I have the data sheets for all the marines I have (except the hellblasters!). I plan to have add an assault intercessors to my marine Kill Team.

Now talking of Kill Team, there is a new edition coming out at the end of August, and I was planning to get a copy, as it had some interesting new mechanics and wasn't just a skirmish version of the 40k (although that isn't necessarily a bad thing). The new version uses Fire Teams to make up the Kill Team - The Fire Teams seem to have to be of one type of trooper - so the Ad Mech needing 2 Fire Teams  could have a Skitarii Ranger Fire Team, and a Vanguard Fire Team or any combination of Skitarii or Sicarians. Unfortunately the rules for the space marines mean that they only get one Fire Team, but no longer can this be a mix of Reivers, Intercessors etc. - It could be all Reivers or all Intercessor or all Assault Intercessors. Not in my opinion a nice team mixing up elite troops .... Well you probably can when the new special set with new rules comes out in the future for the various factions.
So I have decided to pass on the new version of Kill Team at the present time.

I have also finish the Oathmark Human cavalry - Rangers.

These have already seen action in a solo game of  Dragon Rampant (where they were wiped out!).
