Things have slowed C15/16 Orcs

So after painting the Old Chronicle Hobgoblins, thought I was up for painting theC15/16 Orcs.
Unfortunately I then saw some brilliantly paint figures up on the Lead Adventure Forum (LAF), which made me a little disappointed in my daubing on the classic miniatures  ......
Anyway here are the 10 I have managed.

So I have started on some dark age archers and peasants to make myself feel a bit less inadequate ....

Anyway new month tomorrow.....

Next in line - more old Citadel Metal C15/C16 Orcs

In the box sort I found these little fellas - a mix of 25 C15 Armoured Orcs and C16 Orcs.
Some I fixed with plastic bits years ago - now I'm going to get some paint on them.

Chronicle Miniatures - N12 Hobgoblins and N11/RR18 Black Orcs and others

So the lockdown got me looking through various boxes and I came across my stash of Nick Lund's Chronicle miniatures - there are a few Grenadier miniatures in there too as I had picked up a few over time and bought a couple of archers to finish off a unit.
But in record time for me I have sat down and blitz the small horde (possible contradiction there but nevermind).

First up the leader and his advisor - Eeza Ugezod (classic black orc with a fixed axe) and his Hobgoblin Shaman.

Then the skirmishers/scouts (skulks iirc in Kings of War) - only 2 N12 Hobgoblin crossbow  "men" in this unit (I did have one of these as part of my first order to Chronicle back in the early eighties, but he has been long sold off - but now replaced so all good!). The other figures are 2 Grenadier Goblins (the one at the front has been converted with a sword changed to a bow and a quiver added to his back) and 2 Grenadier Orc archers (quick turn around by EM4, but I think the mould is shot).

Next up is a mix of the command group from the RR18 Eeza Ugezod's Mother Crushers, a couple of  N12 Hobgoblins from the second Citadel Journal, a BC4 (Mighty Ugezod's) Death Commando, and the rest made up of second Citadel Compendium pre-slotta N12 Hobgoblins (could be pre-Citadel take over).

The next unit is almost exclusively made up of pre-slotta N12 Hobgoblins, with a couple of Death Commando's in there too. The figure on the front right of the picture is a miniature I picked up in my first order from Chronicle back in the distance past!

Then the N15 Wolfriders - well a couple of Grenadier miniatures in there and front right a very old Chronicle miniature I swapped with a mate when the wolf broke when still in school (30+ years ago), I painted these a while ago.

Then the artillery - this is a Grenadier model, with a Goblin as a "officer".

Finally a group shot of all the Purple People Eaters - I am pretty pleased to have finished these off and and happy with the results.

Progress report

So during the lockdown I have painted 32 out of the 36 old Chronicle/Grenadier Orcs/Hobgoblins/Goblins I found in one of the many boxes of unpainted metal/plastic. I should confess that I did buy 2 extra Orc archers from em-4 miniatures, so that I could have a unit of skirmishers for Kings of War or Dragon Rampant. I plan to post some pictures when I have completed all the miniatures (including basing so I don’t think I will have any until the end of the week.
On other gaming news Osprey’s mass battle rules Oathmark have been released (£25 for the hardback). From reading this review

https://zacgaming.wordpress.com/2020/04/11/oathmark-review-part-2-the-rules/

I am very intrigued by the campaign rules - certainly an interesting approach, which harks back to the battle of Five Armies (book not the disappointing movie) inspired games when I first got metal minis back in the early 1980s. The system partly reminds me of the original Mighty Empires boardgame/campaign system that GW produced way back in the day.

I also download a set of fan made campaign rules for Kings of War, which follow a similar idea of different types of terrain allow access to different types of units - but these are randomly rolled for. So I am currently in danger of being distracted by World building .... and trying to get a campaign started, which reminds me that I should get another game of VSF going.

Field of Battle and WebEx RPG encounter

After years of thinking about doing something with the dark green “grass” carpet purchased from Aldi a few years ago, while the weather was pleasant I decided to have a go at breaking up the green.

This is the result - not too bad. But humans can’t be random. If it is still a bit dark I can have another go at it at a later date. Also picture taken in natural light something wargames stuff rarely is.

The collective got together via Steedo’s WebEx account for Snake-eyes to take us on a Call of Cthulhu adventure as we can’t meet up. The game was fun and we seemed to win without too many errors - the tech worked ok - although I do think face to face is a better way of playing. Snake-eyes moves the narrative on at a good pace. Perhaps another one soon.

Off to do chores and paint of more old Chronicle figures.

Painting the old metal ....

So with the extra time I have gain through the social distancing I have made some small head way into the metal stash ....
First up a Ral Partha - Dark Lord, Evil King.

I’m not sure if I done the reds right, but I didn’t want to do the cliche black everything.
Yesterday I went through some old boxes and found about 30 Chronicle/Grenadier/Citadel Hobgoblins and Orcs.

So I fixed and painted up the Chief (Eeza Ugezod from the regiment of renown - the rest of the command group will turn up in a regiment as will some of the Death Commandos) and Shaman - really enjoyed painting these oldies!
I have gone for a purple skin tone so they are “black” Orcs - painted some wolf riders like this a while ago. Still got a do a shield design and am planning a symbol on the back of the shaman.

England Invaded - Senlac Hill. A virtual game

In the early twentieth century the Germans invaded England and the battle was fought near the site of the original Hastings battle site between a hastily positioned British force under the command of Sir Edmund Steedo and the advancing German forces of Graf Von Schlangenaugen (Snake-eyes) .

The battle field before the battle - picture from a Zeppelin.

The game was played via WhatsApp using adapted One Hour Wargames rules (scenario number 4 - Take the High Ground). I would be taking pictures from each players side of the table and asking for Orders (and sometimes clarification .... and sometimes like a good staff officer should asking "are you sure you want to do that?"). The objective is to hold the hill at the end of the game.

British starting position - there was some concern about putting the Artillery so far forward,  Sir Steedo was adamant that he wanted to be at the hun!

A wide frontal assault from the Graf!

From the British view - open fire while reinforcements arrive from the North.

The Germans advance on the hill trying to move around the flank with the steam tank. Where are those reinforcements?

The advancing Germans take some damage from the units defending the hill - but there is some counter battery fire from the Germans.

The reinforcements moving up - but not taking advantage of the road to move faster (it does help if people read the rules).

The assaulting German blast away at the hill - things aren't looking good for the Brits on the hill!

The shock - the German fire has cleared the hill - the reinforcements rush forward - some making good use of the woods as cover (hits halved in cover).

The view from the Graf's command Zeppelin

The British infantry try to force the unsupported Steamtank back with small arms fire - the fragile machine is taking damage.

The Germans push the infantry forward to consolidate on the hill.

The British infantry continue firing to force the Steamtank back!

Both sides blast away - the British in the woods doing rather well from cover - inexplicably the Steamtank does not fire, panicked crews or no orders (you guess).

The plucky Brits keep up a punishing rate of fire! The Germans are taking some damage  (so are the exposed Brits.

But the Steamtank is out of action as is a  German infantry unit - Huzzah! The British Heavy infantry sneak through a gap in the German left flank.

Unfortunately the British have lost another unit - move further into the woods on their left to have a pop at the German artillery.

The final pictures of the game as time was called (a little early - sorry but with the social distancing I am losing track of time on occassions). A win for the German invader under Graf Von Schlangenaugen. But the British will fight again to defend London .......

Another interesting game - some odd calls, Graf Von Schlangenaugen ordering a unit to turn around away from the enemy .... next time I am going to be less questioning. Steedo putting the artillery so far forward was probably an error, the guns have a 36" range and we are playing on a 3' by 3' mat .....
next time.
I will roll for the scenario and organise another evenings entertainment (if people want to play again).
It was nice to get the England Invaded stuff out again - I like the fact I have to role for what forces each side gets (but I only have 1 tank and 1 artillery for each side so there is some fudging). I might look at the field fortification rules for the next game (but they will reduce hits and so slow the game a bit).

The Witch King ....

Well after many years in a box I have finished off the Witch King on a fell beast (well a cheap plastic wyvern for D&D I bought long ago).

On the whole I think he has come out rather well - the base needs doing, but I am after some sharp sand as the building sand I am using for basing is a little too fine. Although I have come to a decision that I will be selling off my Lord of the Rings forces - not characters and a couple of units rangers and wood elves as these can easily be included in other games.

Also completed is a mirror of Galadriel (or frostgrave objective) made from an acorn cup and green stuff.
Planning another virtual game this evening - which should be fun.
