Onus - first play - Carthage versus Roman

Steedo came around for a first play of the kickstarter of Onus we bought into. I had read the rules and watched a you tube video (Steedo had read half the rules and watch some of the video). I set up two 1000 point armies with a standard general each for Rome and Carthage - the Romans had a couple of Equites, Hastai, Princeps, Velites, Archers and one unit of Triari. The Carthaginians had 2 Cavalry, 2 Lybian spearman, 2 Skirmishers, 2 Punic Phalanx, 1 Punic Archers and 1 armed civilians. We added some terrain from the expansion - some extra rules for us to deal with (just wood and hills).

Steedo picked the Romans and set up first. We both managed to set up our cavalry opposite each other - obviously both planning a sweeping flank attack.

Below the initial deployments and the first few turns - where Steedo attacked on my left. He had unfortunately underestimated my skirmishers, who managed to put some damage on the first unit of Roman cavalry - but they were overwhelmed in the end - however the skirmishers demise allowed the Punic cavalry to force the Romans from the field. Then Steedo decided to charge a Punic Phalanx - this was not a good idea.

Over on my right flank my other unit of skirmishers were doing a great job of holding up a unit of Hastai in the woods … for most of the game, before they were forced to flee.
The later turns below saw the main bodies of heavy infantry move into combat - my left flank was secure, but both the cavalry units were significantly damaged - the right was in a stalemate, although my archers had charged and destroyed a unit of Velites, but were now being pressured by some more Hastai.

The centre was where the game would be decided - I charged my Phalanxes and Spearmen forward into Steedo’s Princeps - who promptly played a card which stopped my general’s phalanx actually fighting that turn … which was annoying. However the other phalanx was able to weaken the Princeps on the other side. A push of pikes then when on for a couple of turns as we tried to manoeuvre units into position. Steedo made a couple of mistakes around this time as he allowed his archers to be isolated, then surrounded and destroyed and he was also unable to get the Triarii with his General into position to do anything. So eventually one Princeps unit was forced to flee and the other destroyed, giving me enough points for a victory - we had decided on 50% casualties… final scores on the doors Carthage 510 points, Roman 50 (sort of makes up for the pastings I’ve been on the receiving end of in Kill Team recently).

So what did we think of Onus? We liked it. The order cards remind me of Maurice (and the Airfix game), and are a challenge to use correctly or have enough of … hand management is tough. If you activate units you can only pick up 1 card at the end of your turn, if you don’t activate any units you can pick up 3 cards, but you are effectively passing and giving the initiative to the other player.

We also kept forgetting to turn over an event card before every ranged attack or melee … some of the cards can be devastating. You can then add cards to your hand to support your attack - but sometimes you just don’t have enough cards.

We got a bit stuck on the Javelin rules - so we need to read up on them. Also I might have to institute a “house” rule that if a unit becomes broken it loses any special formation it was in - Steedo had Wall of Shields on 2 units which became broken, but the rules read that they would only lose the formation if the fled.

A good learning game - we plan to get another in then start a Campaign - between us there are 11 campaigns (with about 70 battles), along with all the other stuff.

Necrons - Deathmarks and Immortals

So after finishing the Skitari off, I was about to start on the Sicarians … but then thought hang on there we  have some Necrons hanging about - probably just needing a quick bit of work on the details, so I had a look and biff baff bop ….

And there are 5 Immortals, 5 Deathnarks and 2 bases of scarabs - just need to do the basing now. The necrons now have 10 warriors, 5 Immortals, 5 Deathmarks, 5 bases of Scarabs and a Royal Warden - enough for a couple of Kill Teams and a force in Xenos Rampant.

Ad Mech - some more Skitari

I have a few days to sort things out, so I managed to paint up the last 5 skitari (3 rangers and 2 vanguard - one surveyor). And the commander of the tank - hopefully I will start on that soon.

I didn’t need any of these for Kill Team - but now I have 2 ten man Skitari Squads (I also have 5 unassembled, which I should sell), so they will see more use in Xenos Rampant or the free version of 40k tenth edition when that arrives …

As a leader I have also painted an Enginseer Tech Priest.

I think I will put some transfers on this guy - for more detail. There are 4 Sicarians and the tank to go for the Ad Mech (unless I pick up any extra bits - like destroyers or robots at the Exeter show).

Just started to finish off the Necrons - which hopefully won’t take too long, then it is back to the Phobos marines.

Got some stuff ….

It has been rather busy at work, but that has stopped the accumulation of stuff! We popped into a nearby WHSmith and a quick perusal of the magazine shelves and I found issue 4 of stormbringer - a gw part work.

I pick this up for the 4 paints and a brush - £8.99 seemed like good value.

Steedo and mine joint kickstarter - Onus came through a couple of weeks ago. Steedo took the later period - Trajan Roman empire, and I took the Punic war and Greco-Macedonian-Persian wars. This looks like a really good product.

The game looks to be a DBA styled card/element game, but with more detail. DK had a fantasy game called Battleground a few years ago which might be similar. I like the transparent terrain to lay over the game mat  and the cards of the troops. Steedo and I have already pencilled in to have a first game (in about 2 weeks).

I also need to get a game of Kill Team in with Tiger-king (I need to return his rule book).

Kill Team - intercession versus Traitors!

I had an unexpected day off due the lack of communication between my union and government, so I asked if anyone was available for a game - DK stepped up (although I wish I hadn’t …). We played 2 teams which hadn’t had an outing - I chose an Intercession Team with 3 Assault Intercessors (including the sergeant with plasma pistol) and 3 Intercessors (one with Stalker rifle and one with Auxiliary grenade launcher). DK picked Traitor marines - 3 marines (champion with plasma pistol and power fist, one with chainsword and pistol and one with a bolt gun) and 8 cultists (from the Blackstone - including 2 gunners with flamer and heavy stubbed).

We allowed the Traitor marines to have the equivalent of shock assault and bolt discipline for free rather than having to use CP.

We went through the scouting phase and I won initiative and the starting position of the game - escalation.

The first turn I managed to put some decent damage on the traitors but not enough do put any out of action. By cunningly getting 2 cultists on one side of the container managed to get wrestle the VP from my marine. He also sent the traitor marines and with some quality dice rolling took and plasma out the grenade guy took out and off the objective, so the turn finished 3-1 to him.

On turn 2 DK won the initiative and sent round the Chaos leader who beat the cr*p out of one of my assault Intercessors - the power fist helped and me not rolling the correct number of dice for my chainsword. And not rolling well …
While on the other flank 4 cultists and a Chaos space marine overwhelmed my Intercessor - again some horrible dice rolling by me. I was down 3 marines, it had all gone wrong.

Turn 3 saw me plasma the Chaos boss below - which was nice.
But the lack of figures was servely limiting me scoring points - DK was stacking them up nicely. I did manage to kill of another traitor marine - this did take some rule checking by DK, as he had lots of hits, but as I attacked - my strike got through first, dealing the killing blow! But by the end of the turn I was down to just the sergeant…

The end of the final turn - the intercessor sergeant surrounded and scoring nil points.

The game ended in a right thrashing 12-2 to DK. Some nice moments. The Chaos team seemed to have a nice mix of a few tough operatives and a number of group activating operatives, allowing them to swamp the objectives. I did have some shocking dice rolls, but I can’t hide from the fact that I didn’t use the intercession team well. It was the first outing for both teams, so I can’t use that as an excuse.
The game played well - no issues with line of sight. DK had a good game - I need to play again … I need to beat someone!

New Sicarians

So after the last game of kill team I decided to get some more Sicarian Infiltrators for the Hunter Clade. So I did - I have added 3 infiltrators and 1 ruststalker, which need to be painted.

This means I can field a very varied Kill Team, but will have 2 units of sicarians for 40k games and or Xenos Rampant.
Just got to paint them up now.

Change of plan …

A little while ago I picked up the old space wolves 2018 kill team set, with the intention of painting them up as space wolves. Then the new edition of kill team came out and eventually the Phobos kill arrived which used infiltrator and incursors, as well as reivers. I picked up some space wolf 3d printed shoulder pads and some infiltrators and set an out assembling at kill team with some options - did some conversions for the helix adept and was pretty happy with the plan … hadn’t really got into the painting this year.

Then while browsing eBay at the weekend I came across a silly cheap eliminator model - which could join the team as an incursor marksman. And as luck should have it I won the auction - hurrah.

But this got me thinking - why was I planning to paint a space wolves team?

I had started a sort of space marine chapter of my own … so I decided that I needed to change the pauldron icon to the rams head from the wolf’s.

A work in progress shot as I remove the wolf icons - and make a few changes to the models - added another grapple launcher and am work on making one of the reivers into an incursor for kill team. For bigger games there will be 2 5 figure squads of reivers and 1 5 figure squads of infiltrators/incursors … would quite like to get a dreadnougt model.
