Heroquest! The best game ever?

So the first game of New Year was quest 1 of the Hasbro reissue of Heroquest - according to the Bard the greatest game ever.

With possibly one of the greatest gaming YouTube videos ever.

The Boy Next Door (BND) was hosting as Zargon the evil wizard. Along with myself, Steedo and DK we were joined by the Boy Up the Road (BUR) - who I knew from mountain bike rides enjoyed a board game or two (however probably more Catan etc). We randomly assigned characters. DK was the elf, BUR was the wizard, Steedo was the Barbarian and I was the Dwarf.

As experienced gamers we decided to split the party quite early on. The objective was to defeat the Gargoyle who was in an a room somewhere in the Dungeon. Obviously in a game aimed at 12 year olds we were convinced that we would be able to handle anything that Zargon threw at us - and to begin with this was true.

However as greed got the better of DK the monsters got tougher. The Dread (Chaos) warriors killed the elf and forced the Barbarian back towards the Dwarf and Wizard - who were about to discover tomb of some old warrior. BND allowed DK back in by missing a turn and respawning at the start with a new name. This in the end caused the downfall of the party, as DK went on a treasure hunting run - unfortunately the Dwarf (me) unleashed the guardians of tome, with a rather tough mummy and then DK found the Gargoyle! Rather quickly (aided by some by some appalling dice rolling by me - 3 attacks in a row with no hits on the monsters), the Dwarf, the Wizard and Barbarian were sent back to the spawning (start) as they were killed. However the regenerated team did manage to defeat the Gargoyle to claim victory, but not before DK’s elf was killed again …

A quality evening’s entertainment, with plenty of banter and BND keen to get quest 2, out sometime - hopefully the BUR wasn’t put off by the fantasy theme of Heroquest.

On Saturday I had a wander on the moor, which was nice.

Next week sees the annual trip down to Kernow for Snake-Eyes Twilight Imperium epic - a long day expected - still winless and not confident after last year’s near miss …
