3 Boromirs .....

Well finally finished off 3 Boromirs - why 3? DK asked that as well.
Because it seemed like a good idea.

Fellowship foot and mounted and White Tower on foot!
Hopefully they will see use with Dragon Rampant forces and Lord of the Rings games (obviously). Might even make a frostgrave Warband....

What I have been faffing about with .....

Been a bit busy with work so I haven't done a lot.
Need to get the painting mojo back - plans are out stripping the ability to complete those plans!

Such is the curse of the gamer!
Managed to put together the Ogre hero that me bro got me for my birthday - got to pause him (circle or square?). Answers on a postcard.

Then some Chaos Maurader Viking mash ups - DK give me some spare parts and I had 6 Saxon/Vikings spare from the SAGA build.

The heads are a little big but nevermind - evil Viking Reavers ..... And cheap!
All I need to do is paint the little Bast*#ds!

And the others ..........
Must stop buying stuff!

Plymouth Wargames Show 2016

Yesterday DK and I ventured down to Plymouth for the Annual wargames show.
It is the first time I have been down in about 3 years due to other commitments - but the camping and walking on the moor had been cancelled due to a severe weather warning.

I have to say I was impressed with the show. Plenty of traders and a massive bring and buy table - very well run by the members of the Plymouth club. There were a number of quality games on display and people to talk to! No pictures of the event too busy and too much to see!

Spoke to Modiphius about airfix battles which looks and sounds very intriguing- see link

We (well DK mainly) also spoke to River Horse Games about the Terminator game - plans and future models and the Waterloo board game (similar games for the future... Agincourt was mentioned) and their planned Labyrinth family game. All sounding very interesting.

We had a play through of the Halo fleet game with the very friendly Dan from Spartan games - seemed to play smoothly. The 15mm Halo ground game sounds promising - will look out for it when it goes out.

Having seen Pendraken's Warband Rules in use with some very nicely painted and based 28s - I would like to try out those rules.

As stated earlier the bring and buy was very good - I didn't buy but I did sell!
A few magazines, Armati rules and Sedition Wars starter set still factory sealed!

So this is what I bought - the booty!

Got some bargains at the show - thank you troll trader and Lesley's bitz box!
Looking forward to playing Dungeon Saga - probably won't paint before playing- sorry DK!
Got some Mantic undead for Frostgrave, Dragon Rampant and anything else I can think of!
A couple more ships for Attack Wing - must finish the Apnex conversion!
RRP for this lot for in excess of £90 - for less than £50! Result!

So very happy with this lot!

A Rampant Retinue or Warband DONE ..................... Well nearly

Well started the new year off with completing by fantasy human army- well warband apart from he basing.

The whole force - mainly the old Harlequin Lord of the Rings figures (still available from Scotia Grendel) with the cavalry supplied by Essex miniatures.
I would like to get a unit of Rangers/scouts and possibly some artillery.

The army points for various rule sets.
There would be a wizard(s) as well but I haven't included them in the lists.

General          68 pts WH. 120 pts KoW.
Spear unit 1 114 pts WH. 120 pts KoW. Phalanx special rule.
Spear unit 2 114 pts WH. 120 pts KoW. Phalanx special rule.
Archers        126 pts WH. 100 pts KoW.
Knights        159 pts WH. 195 pts KoW.

Dragon Rampant
Spear unit 1 - Heavy Foot 4 pts
Spear unit 2 - Heavy Foot 4 pts
Archers - Light Missiles 4 pts
Knights - Elite Riders 6 pts/Heavy Riders 4 pts

Hordes of the Things
4 Spears
2 Bows
2 Knights

The general or King! An Essex Miniatures figure.

A spear unit. Finished!

Archers- bases to finish.

Another spear unit - basing to do.

The knights or heavy horse. Essex miniatures with head and arm swaps. I'm a bit annoyed that I didn't move the standard bearer's arm over to the right more.  I also should have done a musician conversion.  Never mind.

New Year - Something painted already!

Well it is the 2nd January and I have paint 4 Wizards!
First up a Gandalf and Radagast from the old Harlequin/Black Tree Designs Lord of the Rings range.
Nice figures - the Gandalf is probably too "high" fantasy than the old professor described.

Then we have .... A Harry Potter sprog and a Dumboldore type wizard (both Mark Copplestone sculpts). Easy painting.

Happy New Year!

The King is Dead - A review

The quality of the components of this game are very good - cards have a nice feel, the box and board have good quality art work. There are a number of printed faction counters and coloured cubes to represent followers of each faction.

The cleverness of this game is the different levels of strategy required to win.
There are 3 factions Scots (Blue), Welsh (Red) and Romano-British(Yellow).
To win you need the most followers of the winning faction, the factions win by controlling the most regions of Britain - but by collecting followers you reduce the number of that colour to win the region. To win a region a faction need the most followers in that region.
However if there is a tie or no followers in a region then the Saxons take control..... If they do this 4 times then the game ends and the method of identifying the winner (leader of the resistance in this case) changes to the most number of complete sets (1 of each colour) each player has.
You also only have 8 cards to play over the whole game - each player has exactly the same cards.

The challenges are -
Forcing them to play cards - playing the last card can be a game changer.
Bluffing your opponent about your intentions.
Knowing when to let a region go - either to the Saxons or a different faction.
Not identifying with a colour or faction - as this can lead to a faction controlling a number of regions but not have the faction's colours!

I have only really played this a 2 player game - roughly 25 minutes a game. It is worth the money to buy as there is plenty of depth to it. Would like to play with 3 and the 4 player "team" game. The game also has a variation to add extra challenge!

A recommend game!

Thanks to Steedo for coming over and winning one ..... Out of seven I think!

Santa has been!

Well this is my gaming haul this Christmas!

To be honested I picked and probably paid for these but it is nice to get some stuff in the Christmas pile.

I have read both Kings of War and Dragon Rampant which both seem to be good games, which I look forward to getting them to a table.

I have managed to get the Better Half and Thing 1 to play The King is Dead, which appears to be a clever and subtle game - with different strategies to get a win. Unfortunately my opponents didn't seem to get the subtleties of the game (although Thing 1 did win!). I really want to play this again as it appears that it plays quickly and with lots of sneaky ways to win or lose.
