The pictures are from the first game where I was the Luftwaffe and Steedo was the heroes of the RAF!
The bombers and escorts over southern England!
The first of the few!
The Me109E have returned to base leaving the escort roll to the Me110.
The first game had a bit of a learning curve to it and Steedo and I weren't using many difficult manoeuvres requiring a dice roll to see if you are successful. We also weren't using the evade tilt on the models. A run through of the first game was that the Luftwaffe won the initiative more times than the RAF and were able to get good firing solutions which took out the Hurricanes - poor climb rolling by Steedo didn't help. The RAF did damage both the German bombers but not enough for an outright win. I managed to lose one Me109 to lack of fuel! Which were the only Victory Points the RAF got on both play throughs of this scenario.
The less said about the second game where I was the RAF the better! I decided to go for the bombers and allowed Steedo to get a very good position on my Spitfire, so good that it was destroyed of the first turn! From there it when downhill with poor dice rolls meaning the RAF weren't damaging the Luftwaffe but they were destroying another Hurricane - a humiliating defeat! Good job I wasn't in fighter command 75 years ago!
For the 3rd game DK played as the RAF with 2 spitfires and 2 hurricanes against Steedo and myself with 2 Me109s and 2 Me110s in a 150 pointer. This game showed how important initiative is in this game - the Axis didn't win it once! DK did some great manoeuvres - at one point managed to line up 3 of his planes in a nice row. If my memory serves me correctly both sides had lost a plane when time was called, but all the remaining aircraft Luftwaffe had taken damage! A narrow win to the RAF.
Overall a good game - I still have to get my head around the manoeuvring this is very important - as it should be and the altitude thing - wasn't happy at a spitfire flew over a bomber which could fire at it - might need a house rule (like the tail gunner for the 110). Winning the initiative is key for this game and it is frustrating when you don't get it.
As an observation I an not sure why they scaled the models and hexes the size they did as the game requires a lot of space - and a bigger table or possibly the floor to play on - just an observation mind.
Thanks DK for bringing it over for a game - it looks Ace!

Hi Nick,
ReplyDeletegreat write up as usual & thanks for your kind comments. I think if the last game had lasted any longer I would have been in trouble as one of my Hurricanes was crippled with a -2 on all checks. Great fun & thanks for hosting!
The flames look good! :)
ReplyDeleteNo pics for game 2???? ;)
ReplyDeleteSorry didn't need pictures of the Ace Spitfite being shot down on turn 1 - so forgot to take anymore 😜
