Kachas Pass

Last night we started off the very old Warhammer campaign pack Blood Bath at Orc's Drift - with scenario 1 Kachas Pass. DK and I played this game 30 years ago (in different parts of the South West), so a real blast from the past for us. Steedo and Jon - their first game of Warhammer!
It was also an opportunity to get some of my Warhammer minatures on the table for the first time in a good couple of years - I have been wondering what to do with them???

We played the game using Warhammer 6th Edition rules (using the Warbands small action amendments) rather that the 2nd Edition rules that the pack was originally designed for. Warbands rules allow for small units but basically follow normal Warhammer rules regarding combat etc. I felt this would get the commanders setting different units off on different tasks.  
House rule was that units could merge if in contact with a successful Leadership roll - I was hoping that this reflect sub-leaders bringing groups together to get a task done!
DK took on the roll of Fangor Gripe and the Vile Rune Orcs, while Steedo and Jon were Erdolas Thringal and the Elves. I was GM and Silas Meel (half-orc spy in custody of the Elves). The Elves took the option to be Skirmishers.

The game started as per the instructions in the scenario.

Then the half-orc spy escaped! Only to be cut down by a group of Elves. To the delight of Fangor Gripe, as the death of the half-orc was one of his victory conditions! The Elves archery was slowly wearing down the Orcs (even with slight reduced range and weapon strength).
However the Orcs pressed on smashing in the fence on the north of the stockade - where to the amazement of all present a unit of 15 Orcs were put to flight by 3 Elves! But they were back in 2 turns! The northern fence was where the battle was decided with the Orcs slowly surrounding the small group of Elves and their commander in the compound - while the rest of the garrison shot arrows from a distance and Guthrum Mane (a Confrontation Troll standing in for a Giant) smashed a building to the ground!

After the death of Erdolas Thringal the game continued for a couple of turns with the Orcs killing a few more Elves. The Vile Rune Tribe had failed to wipe out the garrison (the reason being in 6th Ed WH Elves have a move of 5, so the Orcs couldn't chase them down!). The scenario victory points worked out as 24 - 10 to the Elves - Well done the Newbies!

What impact will this have on the final battle?

Overall the game went well with a couple of very rusty players (one acting as GM) and two newbies - I think on the whole the use of Warband amendments worked about right.

Now on to Ashak Rise!

Just 3 Dwarfs and 2 Orc archers to paint - as well as finishing off King F'Yar (unavailable for this game as unpainted).

The evening was finished with a quick game of Carcassonne (good win for Jon) and a few of One Night Ultimate Werewolf - always good fun, but when setting up the app keep it on the Male voice and  crickets/dramatic the others are just annoying!
